Everyone knows tulips. They are the jewels among our flowers, a great joy to many of us. A typical Dutch icon. They are a great inspiration to many artists and designers, including Marco Manders. His Tulpi-seat, a public chair design, is a reflection of this inspiration. The Tulpi-seat not only mimics the aesthetic appeal of a tulip but also incorporates practical features such as self-cleaning and full 360-degree rotation.
The Tulpi-seat stands out due to its unique properties. It automatically folds when its occupant gets up, ensuring a clean and dry seat for the next user. This feature shields the seat from exposure to outside elements like rain, bird droppings, or leaves. The seat also offers full 360-degree rotation, allowing users to choose their own view.
Marco Manders has prioritized sustainability in the realization of the Tulpi-seat. The synthetic material used offers high quality and long durability. It can be recycled, producing a minimal amount of waste. Polythene, a thermoplastic used in the design, is not affected by bacteria, making the product durable. It can be melted down and used again for new products. The Tulpi-seat is available in nine colors, adding a vibrant touch to any environment.
The design process of the Tulpi-seat was extensive, spanning seven years. It focused on design, ergonomic features, and the engineering process. The biggest challenge was to maintain the shape of a tulip while incorporating all the features. A working fold-system was developed to make the seat 'disappear' in the backrest. The design underwent several tests for vandal-proofing and safety, ensuring its suitability for public spaces.
The Tulpi-seat has received international recognition, winning the Golden A' Street and City Furniture Design Award in 2015. This award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. They are venerated products and bright ideas that advance art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
In conclusion, the Tulpi-seat is a testament to Marco Manders' innovative design approach. It combines aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability, providing a unique seating experience in public spaces. The design's success and recognition affirm the potential of design to transform everyday objects and experiences.
